HERE'S THE FULL BRIEF
Background
Celiac Disease CD affects 1 in a 100 Canadians. An autoimmune disease, the body attacks itself when gluten is ingested, resulting in serious food malabsorption, gastrointestinal, digestive and neurological issues. CD is often associated with other food allergies and comorbidities leading to early death. There are over 200+ celiac symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose, which is why it takes about 10 years to get a confirmed diagnosis.
CCA’s awareness campaigns in the past have asked Could it be celiac? This misses our main undiagnosed target audience & the public who may not even know what celiac disease is. By expanding the question to Could it be gluten? we target a much wider, less educated group and fulfill our mission to get those following a gluten-free diet tested for CD.
This campaign is a departure from previous campaigns that relied on visuals of real people. Designed to capture youthful imaginations and those at the beginning of their celiac journey before major health damage is done.
Goal
Create awareness of CD in target audiences so they recognise their problems with gluten could be because they are celiac and should get tested.
Target Market
Undiagnosed people already following a gluten-free diet because they feel better.
People who suspect they may have celiac but have not been tested.
Relatives of people who have known celiac disease to encourage family to get tested.
Followers on CCA support group, to turn them into donors?
Message/Theme
If you suffer from these top 5/7 symptoms you could be gluten intolerant, even celiac. Get tested.
Creative
Cartoon-style Celia and her fellowship of five/seven companions whose personalities are characterized by the top 7 celiac symptoms are on a mission to spread the word to the general public about gluten, so they get tested. The fellowship’s first task is to find fellow sufferers, as many don’t know they have it.
A storyboard draft, back story and character outlines are provided.

Back Story
Celia, a super-healthy celiac who eats great food all the time & her not-so-healthy seven recently diagnosed fellows Poopy, Skinny, Puffy, Dozy, Grouchy, Weepy & Burpy, are on a crusade to educate the undiagnosed & public alike in celiac symptoms so they get tested. All the fellows are unafraid to be seen for the symptoms that define them, because they’re healing and know there’s hope.
The fellows, by putting themselves on display in the market square of Healthy Town, and talking openly about their symptoms, (some extremely embarrassing), others recognise they have similar symptoms and join the fellowship.
Once united with the fellowship (symptoms recognised) people have access to doctors, gastroenterologists & dietitians who can help them back to health.
When people recognise their symptoms they can get tested.
It may take time for our fellowship to heal, but better each person knows they have gluten intolerance or CD so they can manage their health, than spending a lifetime destroying it by eating gluten
Could it be gluten? animated song – story scenario 1
One summer’s evening the fellowship do a musical theatre style flashmob in Unhealthytown square, a fictitious place where people don’t know they have a disease, or don’t know what disease their symptoms belong to.
Each of the seven fellow sings a line stage front, then gets out of the way to reveal another fellow behind, who also sings a line. All the fellowship sing their line until our heroine Celia is revealed at the back of the group, surrounded with gluten free food, her fellows fanned around her. She sings her final line and all fellows sing the finale line together,
Poopy – You’re Poopy if you’re bottom makes noises and gets runny…
Skinny – Skinny if you can’t put on weight & have an achy tummy…
Puffy – Feel like a balloon? Like me that means your Puffy,
Dozy – Dozy if you’re tired and brain feels kinda foggy
Grouchy – Do you snap? Your kinda Grouchy, mean and grumpy?
Weepy – If you’re Weepy, quite Depressed and life feels really bumpy,
Burpy –If you’re always burping, it’s a sure sign you are hurtin’…
Celia – From all the pasta, toast and cakes you’re eat’n
Together – If the symptoms we just showed you, make you sick,
Ask yourself, Could It Be gluten? That’s the trick.
Celia winks to camera, pointing to the food.
All this? It’s all gluten-free.
Many of the crowd gather around the fellow they resemble the most, nodding, yeah, that’s me, me too. The fellows gather their group around them nodding, asking, have you been tested, how do you know you can’t eat gluten, what are your symptoms…some of the crowd start tucking into the gluten-free food.
Fade to black.
.
Celia
A 30-year-old celiac champion with a vision of curing all people with gluten-intolerance/celiac disease so they feel safe in a world that doesn’t understand them. She’s super healthy because she strictly follows a gf diet and follows the latest research to improve her health.
She has integrity and is full of compassion. She unites and empowers the community of patients & professionals, creating safety in numbers.
Fellowship (male & female)
These characters embody the main group of celiac symptoms so people can easily recognise their own symptoms and ask, Could it gluten? The characters are recently diagnosed, so just beginning to recover from their particular set of symptoms, which are different and need different solutions. Once potential patients recognise the fellowship’s symptoms as their own, they are encouraged to get tested because if patients know, they can better manage their lifelong gluten-free journey. Seven is a magical number in many heroic stories/religious traditions.
1. Poopy – diarrhea etc.
2. Skinny – weight loss
3. Puffy – bloated & gassy
4. Dozy – always tired with brain fog.
5. Grouchy - irritable, grumpy.
6. Weepy - anxious, depressed, whole palette of misunderstood neurological problems.
7. Burpy – kids will love this
GOAL
Once people realise it could be gluten, they are called to act, to take the CCA’s symptom checker.
Ultimately the goal is people get themselves tested using a serological (blood antibody test) and gold-standard biopsy.
Then to join the Newly Diagnosed Pathway program & sign up for our newsletters so we can help them best manage their lifelong gluten-free journey.
