Xamarin Android Azure Text To Speech - SSML tags

I am using Microsoft Azure Text To Speech in a Xamarin Android project. The documentation says you can pass xml tags to the API with SSML to adjust parameters of the voices. I have tried a few different ways but the text to speech does not seem to recognize the tags and instead it just reads them all along with the text to be spoken. I need someone to provide me a working example of passing an XML doc containing SSML tags to the Azure API so that it does not read back the tags and instead follows their instructions on modifying the voice.
