Android System Camera Integration Developer
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
Description:
We are seeking an experienced Android developer with deep aosp and framework expertise to implement a solution for integrating an external usb uvc video capture card as the primary system camera on a pixel 8a device. The project prioritizes achieving full functionality and reliability, rather than architectural perfection.
Target Setup:
- Device: Pixel 8a
- Android Version: 15 or 16 (currently running Android 16; downgrade is acceptable if necessary)
- External Camera: Standard usb uvc video capture card
- video source: a windows pc utilizing obs or vmix
current situation:
the usb capture card successfully provides video to the pixel device when used with a dedicated application. However, the device currently does not expose this capture card as a standard Camera2 system camera. The External Camera Provider is not yet integrated into the current Android build.
Required Outcome (Functional):
- The external usb uvc capture card must be exposed as a fully functional system camera.
- It must be visible and accessible through standard Android Camera2, CameraX, WebView, and browser camera APIs.
- The external camera must be usable by any standard application without requiring custom USB handling.
- Once the external camera is exposed as a system camera, all internal device cameras must be hidden from applications.
- The system should expose only two camera Ids:
- id 0 = back camera
- id 1 = front camera
- both camera ids (0 and 1) must resolve to and utilize the same external usb camera.
Acceptable Approaches:
- Modifications to the AOSP framework.
- Changes to CameraService and/or CameraProvider.
- Device-specific or Pixel-specific patches.
- Practical or non-elegant implementations are acceptable, as the focus is on achieving the required system-wide behavior quickly.
What is NOT Required:
- Upstream-ready patches.
- Clean or generic architectural solutions.
- Support for multiple device models.
Deliverables:
- Clear patches or diffs along with comprehensive build and flash instructions for the Pixel 8a, or a ready-to-flash build for the Pixel 8a.
- Concrete proof of functionality, including Camera2 enumeration and successful usage by standard applications.
Requirements for the Freelancer:
- Proven experience working with Android camera framework internals.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate the External Camera Provider and manage camera enumeration.
- A strong focus on delivering a working solution efficiently.
