Improve Server Communication for Xamarin App

My Xamarin mobile application is experiencing continuous freezing during server communication on a 30mbps network. The app currently uses a REST API for data transfer.
I need to either improve the communication efficiency (I don't know if this is possible) or improve the client-side to automatically retry on failure/display loading mechanism
