Engaging Children’s History Book Layout
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
I’m wrapping up the manuscript for a 32-page, 8"×10" landscape children’s nonfiction history title aimed at fourth-graders and now need a designer who can translate my vision into a print-ready interior and cover. The priority is engaging visuals that spotlight historical photographs while keeping the overall layout clean, reader-friendly, and educationally effective.
I have most of the photos needed for the project and reference images to share to guide the design process. I also have typography and a good idea of the color palette in mind but am open to suggestions from an experienced designer.
What the project looks like:
• Interior: full layout with photos, maps, timelines, fact boxes, sidebars, callouts, and other learning aids arranged so the pages feel lively rather than cluttered.
• Covers: paperback front/back/spine plus a separate hardcover wrap.
• Output: press-ready PDFs (bleeds, margins, color profiles, barcodes, etc. accounted for).
Collaboration style:
We’ll start with an initial brainstorming session over video to lock down grids, type hierarchy, and visual tone. Transparency is key—I value honest communication and prefer working with someone who can clearly demonstrate their expertise in book interior design. From there I’m happy to work through up to three feedback rounds to fine-tune details; clear milestones and timely check-ins keep everything on track.
Ideal fit:
You’ve handled children’s nonfiction before, love photo-heavy layouts, and can show work that balances strong imagery with easy navigation for young readers. Comfort with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is a must.
