Precise PDF Text Edit & Preserve

I have a finished PDF whose wording needs to be updated without anyone noticing the file was ever opened. The task is limited to text manipulation—no images or form fields will be touched—but the replacement text must sit in the exact same spots, in the exact same font, size, colour and kerning as the original. In other words, when the file is compared side-by-side, only the wording should differ.
Equally important, the document’s internal profile must stay intact. Once you hand the file back, the author tag, creation and modification dates and every other document property have to read exactly as they do now. I will be checking the finished PDF in Acrobat’s “Document Properties” panel as well as with a metadata inspector, so please be comfortable working at that level of precision—whether you rely on Adobe Acrobat Pro, iText, PDFLib, or your own scripting workflow is up to you.
