PDF Auto-Serial Script

I have an existing, fully-designed PDF, and I need a small JavaScript action inserted so that every time the file is sent to print it assigns the document a fresh, sequential serial number before the print job begins. The counter must never reset—each print adds exactly +1 to the last value and the number should be visible on the page exactly where I will indicate.
The job is straightforward: embed the code, test it with a few mock print runs to confirm the sequence advances correctly, then return the working PDF (or clear implementation instructions if you prefer to deliver the script separately). The solution has to work in Adobe Acrobat/Reader without requiring external applications or plugins.
Once I can hit Ctrl+P and watch 001, 002, 003… appear automatically, we’re done.
