1. Introduction
This document provides a comprehensive design brief for The Seniors Connect, a web application designed to empower seniors through digital engagement, communication, service coordination, and learning tools. The application prioritizes accessibility, safety, and engagement to improve the overall quality of life for older adults. This brief is based on the project overview and contract proposal for the application's development.
2. Project Vision and Goals
Vision
To bridge the digital divide for older adults by providing an inclusive and accessible platform that enhances their lives through technology. The vision is to enable seniors to remain healthier, happier, and more connected, empowering them to engage with their communities and access essential services with confidence.
Goals
The primary goals of The Seniors Connect application are to:
• Reduce isolation and mental health risks among seniors.
• Improve online safety and awareness of fraud prevention.
• Increase the participation of marginalized seniors in community life.
• Enhance digital and health literacy among the senior population.
• Empower older adults to access telemedicine, essential services, and civic life.
• Provide opportunities for up-skilling and re-entering the workforce.
3. Target Audience
The primary target audience for The Seniors Connect application is older adults, including those in rural, urban, and remote regions. The application is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all seniors, including those with disabilities and those from diverse backgrounds (2SLGBTQIA+, racial or gender-based inequity).
4. Key Features
The application will include two distinct sections,
1- a landing page which will include:
I. Feature list
a. Socialization tools
b. Online and digital trainings
c. Health education and management
II. Donation section
III. Sign in/sign up sections
IV. Podcast and YouTube links
2- A web app that will include the following features:
1- Socialization Tools: Design intuitive forum interfaces. The user flow should be simple: select a topic/group, view conversations, and contribute. Include clear buttons for sending messages.
a. Combating Ageism : Discussion spaces (Forums) to challenge age-related stereotypes and discrimination. This section should feature discussion spaces and advocacy tools. Design a layout that encourages storytelling and sharing.
b. Voice for Diverse Seniors: Dedicated forums for specific communities, including 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors, seniors with disabilities, and those experiencing racial or gender-based inequity. Create dedicated forum spaces. The design must ensure a sense of safety and privacy. Use distinct visual cues or color schemes for these dedicated forums.
c. Healthy Aging & Advocacy: Forums for discussing and sharing information on housing, nutrition, and social assistance programs. Design forum pages for discussions on housing, nutrition, and social assistance. The layout should clearly separate different topics. Users should be able to easily post new questions and reply to existing threads.
2- Online Safety & Security: Tutorials and resources on safe online banking, fraud prevention, and awareness of elder abuse.
3- Health Management: Tutorials and resources on using telehealth services, booking online appointments, and improving health literacy.
4- Basic & Digital Literacy Tools: Learning modules to help seniors develop essential digital skills for everyday life.
5- Life Skills Upgrade: Access to online and in-person learning opportunities to help seniors re-enter or remain in the workforce. Design a portal that links to external online and in-person learning resources. The layout should be a curated list, with clear descriptions, logos of the providers, and direct links to the courses.
6- Podcast and YouTube Integration: Links to a podcasting series and YouTube channels, providing additional content and resources.
Note: All learning modules should be identical with video or text-based content.
Deliverables I’d like to see:
• Wireframes and a clickable prototype that demonstrate the entire user journey
• Fully responsive front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript or modern framework) integrated with a back-end API and relational database
• Deployed staging instance and concise documentation covering setup, tech stack, and administrator workflows
• Accessibility report confirming the design passes WCAG 2.1 AA checks
If the build is solid and extensible, I plan to add learning modules and simple health trackers later, so structuring the codebase for future features is appreciated. Let’s create a welcoming digital gathering place where seniors can share stories, ask questions, and support one another with ease.
