Assessment 1 – Musical Score and a 500-Word Essay
Assessment Task: The first assessment is a portfolio consisting of a short-hand musical score and a 500-word descriptive essay explaining how the score works. Students are encouraged to use musical notation and theoretical principles to develop a score that quickly communicates the writer’s intention to a wide variety of musical performers. The essay will evaluate the decisions made during the construction of the score and explain why this was the best approach to get the information across to the desired musicians.
Weighting: 40%
Date/time/method of submission: Submit the score for your song and your 500-word evaluative essay as a single document. You can do this by importing a scan or a .pdf of the score as a graphic into the document containing your essay. You will need to ensure that your assessment is uploaded as a single document, and in the correct format (i.e. a Word document or .pdf). Submit the document including your score and essay via Turnitin by 2359 on 29 April.
Word Count or Equivalent: Musical Score and 500-Word Essay (+/- 10%)
Assessment Criteria (mapped to learning outcomes): You will be marked on your ability to create an effective musical arrangement for the assigned group of performers (2), to communicate the specific musical assignment effectively for each performer in the group (1), and to create a well-written evaluative essay that effectively communicates your decision-making and judgment in creating your score (3).
Timing and Methods of Feedback: Feedback will be given via Blackboard within three working weeks of the due date.
2.2.2 Assessment 2 – Musical Score and a 500-Word Essay
Assessment Task: For the second assessment, you will create a musical score of an assigned song and then lead a musical group in a performance of that score. A band will be provided similar to the house band for a late-night television show. The band will be allowed one single rehearsal to take the score and turn it into a convincing live performance, which can be in any genre.
After the performance, you will write a 1000-word reflective essay examining the aims of the score and critically evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the writing approach and the organisational tools that you applied when communicating and rehearsing with the band.
Weighting: 60%
Date/time/method of submission: You will prepare the score for a performance to take place during weeks 12-14. On the assigned day you will lead the band through a rehearsal and then a live performance. You will submit your musical score and reflective essay as a single document via Turnitin by 2359 on 27 May.
Word Count or Equivalent: Live Performance, Musical Score and 1,000-Word Essay (+/- 10%)
Assessment Criteria (mapped to learning outcomes): You will be marked on your ability to create an effective musical arrangement for the assigned group of performers (1, 2); to organise, direct, and monitor the group effectively and to make and clearly communicate any necessary adjustments through a single rehearsal and performance (4), and to create a well-written essay that reflects critically on the writing approach and organisational tools you used when working with the band (3).
