I was in a remote village of Africa building a school and the environment was Isolated, resources were scarce, and the environment was extremely hot and humid, we were confined to a finite area and communication was a challenge as the village residents spoke Wolof and we spoke English, similar challenges to what we test in analog astronaut missions. In this village there were definitive socioeconomic discrepancies as some people lived in very modest huts with a thatch roof and others lived in large concrete buildings. Some people had electricity while others did not. Some people had running water while others had to trek a great distance to the well to get their water. The family we resided with consisted of 2 wives and 18 children and grandchildren, everyone worked together happily and knew their jobs for the day. The women had their infants tied to their backs while they worked hand in hand with other villagers and often would break into song and dance. They would all take turns getting water for each other, helping each other with each other’s children and giving each other breaks. It got me thinking that perhaps we do not need to reinvent the wheel, perhaps simple is what will work best when designing settlements on the moon /mars or any other planet in the future. The people of the village were the happiest people I have seen in such a long time; families took care of each other and while disagreements between people did occur, they were very quickly handled by everyone around them who would step in to help resolve things. The village has a male elder and a female representative that serves as the go to for any important decisions or issues that effect the village or its residents. There is an unspoken respect that was palpable between the elders and the residents as well as the children and the adults. The adults all take care of each other’s children like their own. The animals that provide food for families are free to wander the village but always return to their respective homes at night.


Abstract: This study explores the potential application of traditional village social structures to future space settlements, drawing parallels between the challenges faced in remote terrestrial environments and those anticipated in extraterrestrial habitats. Through a comparative analysis of a remote village (Ndione Matening in Senegal Africa) and analog astronaut missions, the research examines how established social constructs can address issues of resource scarcity, confined living spaces, and communication barriers. The study highlights the effectiveness of communal living, shared responsibilities, and hierarchical respect systems in fostering community cohesion and individual well-being. Findings suggest that adapting these time-tested social models may provide a more sustainable and psychologically beneficial framework for long-term space habitation than novel, technologically driven approaches.

Method: This study employs a qualitative, observational approach, comparing experiences from a remote African village to documented challenges in analog astronaut missions. The primary data source is an ethnographic account of life in a Wolof-speaking village in Africa, where I participated in a school-building project and lived in the village with a family that consisted of 1 husband,2 wives,16 children, and 2 grandchildren. This is supplemented by a review of literature on analog astronaut missions and space psychology.

Key observations from the village setting include:
1. Social structure and governance
2. Resource management and distribution
3. Child-rearing practices
4. Conflict resolution mechanisms
5. Work distribution and communal tasks
6. Psychological well-being and community cohesion. These observations are analyzed in the context of known challenges in space habitation, including isolation, resource scarcity, confined living spaces, and communication barriers.

Results: The study identified several key features of the village social structure that could be beneficial in a space settlement context:

Shared Responsibility: The village demonstrated a high degree of shared responsibility for tasks such as childcare, water collection, and food preparation. This distribution of labor could be crucial in a space settlement where every individual's contribution is vital.

Hierarchical Respect System: The presence of respected male and female elders who served as decision makers and mediators provided a clear governance structure. This could be adapted to create a leadership model in space settlements that balances authority with community inputs.

Communal Child-Rearing: The practice of all adults taking responsibility for all children could be particularly beneficial in a space settlement in which population growth and child development are critical concerns. Community child-rearing, as practiced in African villages through the concept of Ubuntu,The concept of Ubuntu, rooted in African philosophy, promotes a strong sense of community and solidarity in child-rearing by emphasizing interconnectedness and collective responsibility.

Efficient Conflict Resolution: The rapid, community-involved approach to conflict resolution observed in the village( bystanders would intervene to deescalate the conflict and the people having the conflict would take a few steps back from each other while the bystanders would attempt to act as moderators ensuring all people involved in the conflict got a chance to speak without interruption. If it was settled they would shake hands or hug and then go about their day. If it was not settled they would go to the village elder and or womens representative of the village depending on conflict.) could be crucial for maintaining harmony in the confined, high-stress environment of a space habitat. In space settlements we will be dealing with many cultures and perspectives which adds additional challenges

Adaptive Use of Space: The village's ability to utilize communal spaces for multiple purposes (work, socializing, childcare) offers insights into efficient space utilization in confined habitats.

Psychological Resilience: The high levels of happiness and contentment observed, despite material scarcity, suggest that this social model promotes psychological well-being in challenging environments.

This study concludes that future space settlement designs should consider incorporating the elements of traditional village social structures. The communal living model, with its emphasis on shared responsibilities, clear governance structures, and community-wide child-rearing, offers a promising framework for addressing the social and psychological challenges of long-term space habitation. Further research and testing in analog environments is needed to explore how these principles can be practically applied in space settlement design, and how they might interact with the technological and scientific requirements of space habitation. Nonetheless, this study suggests that in our quest to settle other worlds, we may find some of our most valuable solutions in the social structures that have sustained human communities for centuries.

To expand on this research, we should explore via analog astronaut missions how traditional village structures and designs from various cultures could inform and inspire the development of future space settlements. This approach would blend traditions and generational wisdom with cutting-edge space technology, potentially creating more sustainable and psychologically comfortable living environments for space settlers.

The concept should delve into specific aspects of village design that might be applicable to space habitats. For instance, the layout of communal spaces in traditional villages often fosters social interaction and community bonding. These principles could be adapted to create gathering areas within space habitats that encourage astronauts to socialize and maintain psychological well-being during long-term missions.

Additionally, the efficient resource management systems employed in many traditional villages, such as water conservation techniques or waste management and recycling methods, could provide valuable insights for developing closed-loop life support systems in space. Adaptable architecture is another crucial element to consider.
