PhD Literature Review Gap Analysis

I’m starting my PhD and have reached the bibliometric analysis stage.
My topic is urban planning - transport
My goal is to build a critical narrative that not only surveys the field but clearly exposes where the research gaps lie—those blind spots will anchor the rest of my thesis. I don’t yet have a fixed reading list, so part of the job is to locate, screen, and catalogue the most relevant journal articles, conference papers, and authoritative reports from the major databases in my discipline.
A smooth workflow matters to me. I’d like the sources organised in a reference-manager library (Zotero, EndNote, or similar) with tags and short notes so I can trace them later. From there, the core deliverable is a polished literature-review draft that clusters studies thematically, contrasts key findings, and culminates in a clear statement of the research gaps. Please ensure all citations follow my faculty’s required style; I’ll provide the formatting guide as soon as we start.
To defend this section confidently at my viva, I also need a concise methods note that outlines your search strategy—databases used, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and keywords—so the process remains transparent and reproducible.
