For each of the stories you have chosen, answer the following questions. Please work on your answers in a separate document, for example in MS Word or Google Docs, and then upload your completed answers in MS Word or PDF form before the deadline.

What are the sources for the story? What does the choice of those sources tell us about how the story was put together?

What is the narrative of the story? A narrative often has a beginning, middle, and end; a central conflict; heroes and villains; a moral lesson.

What are some of the ways that language is used to express an evaluation of the different points of view in the story? For example, a news story might refer to someone who has committed a violent act as a “terrorist,” or a “freedom fighter.” The first term is a negative, evaluative term – “terrorist” is bad, by definition. The second term is a more positive, evaluative term – “freedom” is usually seen as a great thing to “fight” for.

What are some of the ways that visual images are used to tell the story, either photos in a print piece or moving images in a video piece? How are the images framed? Whose point of view do they represent?

What are the similarities and differences between the stories from the two different news outlets? What might explain those similarities and differences?
