Ethics Position paper on Majumdar novel (20% of total grade)
For this paper, you should choose one ethical issue that arises in the novel, A Guardian and A Thief.
First, describe and explain the issue you chose. Why is this issue an ethical issue?
Draw upon at least three of the moral/ethical frameworks we have studied to apply to this issue; remember to specify any concepts, principles or considerations characteristic of that moral framework. Are there gray areas or aspects of this issue that make it complicated? Explain. Finally, what would you suggest as the best solution to the issue? Consider at least one possible objection to your view, and how you might respond.
In your paper you should draw upon the chapters from Hinman and the novel. This is not a research paper, so all sources should be course readings. You may also include your own perspective on the issue.
Papers must be 1,000-1,250 words (4-5 pages); please include your word count at the end of the document. Papers should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font. Citations should be in APA style, and include a works cited list. You should rely solely on the readings for this class, the Hinman text and A Guardian and A Thief. Use of AI is prohibited.
The goal of this assignment is for you to be able to:
1) identify an ethical issue (i.e., why is the
issue in the realm of ethics, as opposed to simply factual),
2) apply at least 3 different ethical
theories (which involves knowing the main points of the theories, and the principle each theory
uses to evaluate decisions).
3) evaluate ethical decisions based on comparing and assessing the different approaches and the solutions they yield. (this involves being able to justify one solution as better than another and understanding and raising possible objections to your preferred solution.

- Detailed analysis of Utilitarianism, Deontology, and Virtue Ethics
- Clarity and depth in theoretical comparison
- Academic writing style, properly referenced
