Requirements:
- Edit for clarity, coherence, and grammar
- Maintain academic and formal tone
- Ensure accurate representation of metaphorical and analytical perspectives
Ideal skills:
- Strong background in academic writing and editing
- Familiarity with Sonntag and Frank's works
- Excellent command of formal English
Essay No. 1 (20%)
For this assignment, you will be required to analyze two photographs. Students must select at
least one photograph from my list on D2L. (The list includes photographs featured in The
Scar Project and other photo series that I have posted.) The photograph(s) you choose
must be one(s) THAT WE HAVE NOT DISCUSSED IN CLASS. You are allowed to choose
another photograph not posted on D2L, but it must be by one of the photographers included
on D2L. You must include your two photographs in an appendix at the end of your essay.
Ensure that you provide a clear and accurate reproduction of the photographs (if they are
in colour, you must print them in colour, for example).
GNED 1404 Writing about Images 8
For each photograph, you will provide a close analysis of the work as both an example of one
concept from Frank and one concept from Sontag. Some examples from Frank are: the
associated body, the dissociated body, the communicative body, the monadic body, the
disciplined body, the mirroring body, the dominating body, the quest narrative, postmodern
medicine. Examples of concepts from Sontag include: illness as metaphor, psychologizing
illness, illness and “othering,” illness and stigma.
Your essay should be cohesive, clearly-written, and have a sense of unity. You will be assessed
for grammar and sentence structure, paragraphing, a clear overall thesis, and organization. You
will need an introduction, which includes your thesis, and a conclusion for the paper. This paper
must be 4 ½-5 double-spaced pages, not including title page, References page, and
Appendix. You may choose either MLA or APA format for essay writing
