3D-Printed Modular Desk Organizer
Budget: $10 – $30 AUD
## PROJECT BRIEF — MODULAR 3D-PRINTED DESK SYSTEM (610 mm)
### Project overview
I am designing a **single, cohesive 610 mm–long desk piece** composed of **three PLA-printed modules** that visually read as **one intentional product**, not three independent boxes placed side by side.
The object should feel architectural and deliberate, with a strong sense of rhythm, proportion, and negative space. Even when partially empty, the piece should still look composed and visually satisfying.
The design draws inspiration from:
* A layered, stepped desk organizer (PDF reference provided)
* The real, mixed-use nature of my desk, as seen in the reference photo (books, tech, consoles, display objects)
This is not a minimal slab nor a cluttered grid. It should feel like a sculptural organizer that organizes through form.

### Design goals
* Clear hierarchy of heights and depths (no flat skyline)
* Intentional use of negative space and open voids
* Visual flow from left to right
* Balanced composition that still reads well when approximately 50% full
* A product-like, refined appearance rather than a DIY or generic organizer

### Module roles (conceptual guidance)
The system consists of three modules, each with a dominant role:
**Module 1 — Storage / Tech Anchor**
* Visually grounds the system
* Supports heavier or denser items
* More solid mass, fewer openings
**Module 2 — Display / Personality**
* Most expressive module
* Custom nooks, varied depths, and open shelves
* Designed around display objects and small devices
* Strong emphasis on negative space
**Module 3 — Organization / Order**
* Upright storage for books, notebooks, or stationery
* Calmer, more structured geometry
* Acts as the visual endpoint of the system
Exact layouts are flexible. Thoughtful reinterpretation is encouraged.

### Manufacturing constraints
* Designed for FDM 3D printing in PLA
* Optimized for Bambu Lab A1 build volume
* Each module printed separately
* Minimal or zero supports preferred
* Clean print orientation for visible faces
* Appropriate wall thickness and internal reinforcement

### Assembly and integration
The three modules must:
* Align cleanly when placed side by side
* Use hidden alignment features (rails, tongues, magnets, or underside fasteners)
* Avoid visible screws or hardware on front and side faces
* Visually merge into a single object using subtle seams or shadow gaps

### Finish and surface treatment
The finish is not fixed. Acceptable options include:
* Matte or satin surfaces
* Subtle printed textures that reduce fingerprints
The finish should enhance the stepped geometry and maintain a refined appearance.
