Scale Models of Slave Quarters

Creation of small scale models of slaves quarters from in the late 1600’s to be 3D printed (closed mesh solid stl files to be printed on a high-detail SLA printer). Attached is a photo (Img-2509) the client gave us as to what the overall look and shape is. We have roughed this model out as angular solids (house.step) to give it the overall size and basic shape. What we need from you is to “wrap” the textures of the reed roof and wall surface onto this general shape. All those hard edges would disappear.

The real walls are made from “wattle and daub”, which is small sticks that are woven together and covered with mud. The example photo is new construction, so the walls are “perfect”. In reality, there would be bits of mud missing here and there (download.jpg) There are many reference files of “reed roof” and “wattle and daub” Googleable online to work from.

There are 5 separate slaves quarters. Each is very slightly different... all it would take would be a bit of tweaking in the roof and maybe a few pushes, pulls and stretches of the walls to avoid the duplication feel.

The actual model building should be a hollow one room structure and have an open doorway like the photo. The thatched roof should be bumpier and wavy with irregular edges and a linear texture. They would all generally be the same size, but if you lengthened and shortened a few by a 1/16” to 1/8”, that would help add irregularity.

I would draw up the soft rounded walls (adding a doorway) and then give it a fine “sand” texture. This texture will allow me to use thin paint washes that will really add realism. Next, I would create a half dozen shapes of irregularly flaked off wall that shows the woven sticks and apply these on the 10 versions in a fairly random order. I would think that these patches would congregate more near the lower half of the buildings, as that is where the rain would hit more. I would also think there would be some buildings that would be better repaired and have less patches, and maybe a few that are in rougher shape. A few small cracks in the wall, coming from these peeled patches, would be nice to see and would hold wash nicely.

As far as the roof goes, again texture will be key. Even though you won’t be able to see individual strands, once I put a dark wash onto a fine lined texture, it will really pop and give it a huge boost to realism. The sharp points of the reeds extending past the overhang won’t be able to print. The whole edge needs to be irregular and textured, but not thin needles poking out.
