Freelance Mechanical Engineer / CAD Designer – Wearable Hardware Prototype - 07/12/2025 10:04 EST
Budget: $750 – $1,500 USD
I’m looking for a freelance mechanical engineer / CAD designer to help develop a first hardware prototype (P0) for a new wearable device in the audio / communication domain.
The product is a small, mask-like wearable that sits on the face (nose + mouth area) and relates to voice, airflow and comfort. Full technical details and specifications will be shared only after signing an NDA.
Role & responsibilities
• Translate a written product specification into a functional 3D mechanical design.
• Design plastic / rigid parts for 3D printing (and possibly other rapid-prototyping methods).
• Plan basic interfaces for:
– Head straps / mounting on the user,
– Integration of several off-the-shelf components (small valves, magnets, microphone, etc.).
• Deliver clean 3D CAD models (STEP/IGES) + STL files ready for 3D printing.
• Support at least one design iteration after an initial test print and assembly (feedback-based adjustments).
Requirements
• Mechanical engineer / product designer with proven experience in:
– Plastic part design and functional enclosures, and
– Ideally: wearables, masks, respirators, or medical / protective devices.
• Strong skills in at least one major CAD tool (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, etc.).
• Understanding of 3D printing constraints (wall thickness, clearances, assembly, tolerances).
• Ability to think about airflow / sealing / comfort at a practical engineering level.
• Good communication in English and willingness to sign an NDA before receiving full details.
Nice to have
• Experience with consumer electronics enclosures or audio-related products.
• Experience taking concepts from P0 / proof-of-concept to more refined prototypes.
Project details
• Scope: P0 proof-of-concept – one full-scale wearable prototype, not a finished mass-production product.
• Deliverables: CAD + print-ready files + support for one iteration after first test.
• Engagement: remote, with milestones and regular progress updates (screenshots / short calls).
• Budget & timeline: to be agreed based on your experience and proposal.
