Portfolio Item 1 – Problem statement (Max 500 word)
The hair dryer is a small electrical device that is commonly used to blow cool and hot air onto wet hair in order to speed up the drying process and hair styling. The body of the hair dryer is typically made of plastic with either a curve or angular L-shape to provide comfortable grip. Attached to the handle is a fixed power cable with a cable protector which extends the handle a bit more. The majority of hair dryers in the market are big, bulky and take up way too much space in the luggage which make them not travel friendly. To address this issue and ensure a successful product, the following design objectives have been prioritized.
Objective:
Design for Dematerialization – Lightweight design, compact design, use of recycled material.
Design for Transportation- Foldable mechanism, small storage space
Design for Disassembly – Modular design, snap-fit assembly, screwless design, labeling and identification.
Design for Repairability – Accessible components, easy to replace components, clear repair instruction
Design for Manufacturing – Simple design, design for assembly, design for testing
