Organic Cocoon Facade Creative Design
Budget: $15 – $20 USD
Request for Quotation (RFQ): Organic Cocoon Facade Design & Rationalization
1. Project Overview:
Project Title: Cocoon Facade – [New Delhi]
Scope: Transformation of a rectilinear mall facade into an organic, free-form "Cocoon" silhouette.
Objective: To develop a high-fidelity visualization, rationalized parametric model, and fabrication-ready data for a multi-panel aluminum skin with integrated grazing LED lighting.
2. Design Roadmap & Key Milestones:
Phase 1: Schematic Design & Visualization (3DS Max)
Goal: Establish the aesthetic "Flow" and obtain client sign-off on the silhouette.
• Milestone 1.1: Initial Massing & Context Match. 3D model of the existing site conditions based on provided photos/drawings.
• Milestone 1.2: Sub-D Form Finding. Creation of the organic "Cocoon" geometry using Subdivision Surface modeling.
• Milestone 1.3: High-Fidelity Rendering. Finalized "Wow" renders showing the bronze/metallic finish, the "disappearing" trench detail, and nighttime DMX lighting simulations.
• Deliverables: 3D Max Source File, 4-6 Photorealistic Renders (Day/Night).
Phase 2: Parametric Rationalization (Rhino + Grasshopper)
Goal: Convert the "Dumb" mesh into "Smart," buildable panels.
• Milestone 2.1: Surface Reconstruction. Conversion of 3DS Max Sub-D geometry into high-quality NURBS surfaces.
• Milestone 2.2: Diamond Grid Panelization. Implementation of the parametric grid across the facade.
• Milestone 2.3: Planarization & Optimization. Using Kangaroo Physics to flatten 4-point panels for cost-effective fabrication.
• Tolerance Check: Calculation of the "Sagitta" (deviation) for any panels that remain double-curved.
• Milestone 2.4: Lighting Path Integration. Mapping the DMX Flexible Grazer path within the trench at a fixed offset from the skin.
• Deliverables: Rhino (.3dm) file, Grasshopper (.gh) script with clear annotations.
Phase 3: Fabrication & Production Data
Goal: Generate the data for CNC routing and site installation.
• Milestone 3.1: Unique ID Tagging. Every panel must have a generated ID (e.g., C-01-A) etched into its geometry.
• Milestone 3.2: Unrolling & Nesting. Flattening of 3D panels into 2D cut-files and optimizing them onto 3mm thk. Aluminium Sheets (5005 Grade) of size 2440mm x 1220mm.
• Milestone 3.3: Structural Rib Extraction. Generating the "Contour" curves for the steel/aluminum sub-structure that brackets to the existing glass facade.
• Deliverables: Nested DXF files for CNC, Fabrication Schedule (Excel), and Assembly Map.
3. Technical Requirements for Freelancers:
• Proficiency: Expert level in 3DS Max (Poly modeling/V-Ray or Corona) and Rhino 7/8 (Grasshopper/Kangaroo/LunchBox).
• Experience: Proven track record in "Design-to-Fabrication" workflows for complex facades.
• Geometry Logic: Understanding of Planar Quad (PQ) meshes and the difference between cold-forming and stretch-forming aluminum.
4. Evaluation Criteria:
a. Portfolio Quality: Previous organic/parametric builds.
b. Logic Clarity: The ability to explain the Grasshopper script so the internal team can make minor site adjustments.
c. Timeline: Ability to meet the staggered milestones within four weeks.
5. Submission Instructions:
Kindly provide a lump-sum fee broken down by Phase, along with an estimated timeline for each Milestone. Please include a sample of a previous "Unroll" or "Nesting" project to demonstrate technical competence in production data.
Do Note that all Grasshopper scripts are proprietary deliverables. If the mall’s as-built dimensions vary during the 30-foot glass de-installation, you will need that script to "regenerate" the panels instantly without paying for a full redesign.
What is your target timeline for moving from this "Concept Brief" to having the first set of fabrication files on the factory floor?
