Internal Self-Closing Hinge Redesign
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I have a steel storage box fitted with two lightweight, self-closing doors—one on the front and one on the top. The current hinges sit on the outside of the cabinet, and they spoil the overall look. I want to keep the same self-closing performance but move the hinge mechanism inside the enclosure and do it in a cost-effective way.
Here is what I need from you:
• Study the existing setup and door geometry.
• Propose at least one practical internal hinge concept that can handle doors of up to 5 kg without sacrificing the automatic return action.
• Provide basic CAD drawings or sketches with dimensions, material callouts, and mounting details so my fabricator can implement the change.
• List any off-the-shelf components required (torsion springs, concealed hinge types, etc.) along with part numbers or supplier links, or specify a simple fabricated solution if that is more economical.
• Briefly justify the choice with a quick strength or life-cycle check to confirm the hinge will operate reliably in steel construction.
Acceptance criteria
– Doors self-close smoothly through the full swing angle.
– All hardware remains hidden when the doors are shut.
– No new operations should add significant cost to my current sheet-metal process (laser cut, bend, weld).
– Your documentation is clear enough for a shop to prototype without further clarification.
