3D Form & Texture Design
Budget: $2 – $8 USD
Project 1 is due Sunday, September 28:

Materials: Poster Board, paper, glue, cutting matt, ruler, exacto knife, ruler.
Optional Materials: Scissors, paint, Tape, colored paper, tissue paper, textured paper, Elmer’s glue or modge podge, string, wire, and other invented textures. You may use a variety of methods to attach the materials together: hot glue, Elmer’s glue, masking tape, thread; string; paper-mache’; gel medium; etc.
The goal:
To design and create an abstract sculpture using geometric forms and incorporating texture. Your sculpture must consider and utilize these elements and principles: Form, Space, Texture, Unity, and Balance. Remember that craftsmanship and design are the 2 major components to this grade.
Size requirements: minimum 12” in length or width, you may go larger
Your Sculpture Must Include:
At least 5 Geometric Forms
They can be all the same form
They can be all different forms
They can be some variation in between
At least 3 Actual Textures
1 must be a paper texture technique
1 invented texture
1 choice of paper or invented texture
The forms need to be attached somehow
Either glued directly to each other (hot glue works best)
Or connected with another element in between (straws, wires, etc.)
Color is not a requirement for this project, but should be considered.
The Process:
Step 1) Review the Project 1 PowerPoint and all of the corresponding YouTube videos in the Week 3 folder in Course Contents.
Step 2) Print out the Forms template from the Project 1 Folder in Course Contents.
Step 3) Choose the forms you would like to make. You must make at least 5 forms. Yes, you can make more than that. Are they all the same form or do they vary?
Step 3) Using your scissors or exacto knife and cut out the entire shape of the pattern, i.e., Cut around the perimeter of the form. Be careful not to cut the tabs off!
Step 4) Once you have them cut out you can use them as a template and trace these cutouts onto poster board. You can use a pencil and ruler to redraw your tabs and fold lines.
Step 5) Fold every tab and line inward (or valley style). This should leave your pencil marks on the inside.
Step 6) Once folded, you can glue or tape your tabs (under) to complete the form. (If you use tape make sure it looks cohesive in the design). If you have cut, traced, and glued everything precisely then you should have a solid 3D form.
Step 7) Make at least 5 forms and arrange these in a creative sculptural composition.
Step 8) Try some of the paper cutting techniques provided in the PowerPoint and YouTube videos. Apply at least 1 paper texture to the planes of your form. After adding this texture, you can explore other materials to create texture with as well (i.e., paint, salt, buttons, wire, thread, tin foil, etc.)
Step 9) Consider balance and the overall composition of this finished mini sculpture, and use some design sensibilities when you are texturing your work. Where would your sculpture be installed? Who is viewing it? What content and intent would you like to have with the finished piece?
Make sure you include great images of your artwork. For the images, you must include:
1. Front view
2. Side View
3. Back View
4. ¾ View
For the written explanation, include:
1. The Title of Your Work.
2. Dimensions
3. Location (Where would this sculpture be installed?)
4. Subject Matter (What is Represented?)
5. What materials and techniques did you use to create your textures?
