Custom Automotive 3D Design Specialist
Budget: $15 – $25 USD
Project Description – Automotive 3D Design & Body Development (Long-Term Collaboration)
I am looking for an experienced automotive 3D designer / CAD modeler to collaborate on a custom car body project.
The project will be based on a donor car, most likely either:
Toyota MR2 W30 (MR-S), or
Mercedes SLK 300/AMG
Scope of Work
This is a long-term project (approx. 12 months) focused on developing a complete, build-ready body design.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Creating accurate 3D body models based on reference images, renderings, and design direction
Adapting the design to fit the exact geometry of the donor car
Working with 3D scan data to ensure proper alignment and tolerances
Preparing models suitable for:
3D printing (prototypes, sections, details) or CNC milling in PU foam (plugs and molds for body panels)
Supporting a workflow intended for metal or aluminum body construction
What I’m Looking For
This is not a one-off modeling task. I’m looking for someone who:
Has real experience with automotive surfaces, not just generic 3D modeling
Understands Class A / near-Class A surfacing, panel breaks, and manufacturability
Has experience with plugs, molds, and body panel development
Is comfortable discussing design trade-offs, construction methods, and feasibility
Can collaborate, iterate, and challenge ideas when needed
Think of this as a design partnership, not just task execution.
Tools & Formats
Preferred (but flexible):
Alias, Blender, Rhino, or similar
Output formats suitable for CNC/3d printer and fabrication (STEP, IGES, STL, etc.)
Project Style
Iterative and exploratory
Strong focus on proportions, stance, and surface quality
Design driven by visuals, references, and ongoing refinement
Engineering realism matters – this car will be built
If you have previous experience with custom car builds, kit cars, coachbuilding, or concept-to-manufacturing workflows, that’s a big plus.
Please include relevant automotive examples in your portfolio.
