Handheld Medical Device Enclosure Design

I need a production-ready enclosure for a portable H₂S breathalyzer that will be used in clinical diagnostics. The unit has to look and feel like a genuine piece of medical equipment, withstand hospital cleaning routines, and be simple to service. For the first round of prototypes I will print in PLA on an in-house FDM machine, so the geometry must suit that process while already carrying the draft angles, wall thicknesses, and snap features we’ll need later for injection-molded ABS/PC-ABS.

Key considerations include:
• A sealing strategy that achieves at least IP-54 around the sensor head and electronics bay
• Smooth, wipe-friendly exterior surfaces with no dirt traps; compatibility with IPA and VHP disinfectants
• Two-piece shell with minimal screws for fast assembly and field servicing
• Space allocation for our existing PCB, electrochemical sensor, micro-pump, 2000 mAh Li-ion pack, USB-C, and a disposable mouthpiece port

Turnaround is ASAP—I’d like to review initial CAD within a few days and move quickly to a final DFM package.

Deliverables
• Native and STEP CAD files
• Exploded assembly that clearly shows seals, gaskets, and fastening approach
• 2-D drawing set with tolerances, surface finishes, and call-outs suitable for ISO 13485 documentation
• Brief DFM/DFS report outlining the path from PLA print to injection-molded tooling
