Dog Box Conversion & Manufacturing Drawings - 27/12/2025 06:48 EST
Budget: $250 – $750 AUD
Project Title:
Convert Manual Gearbox to Dog Engagement Gear Set + Complete Manufacturing Drawings
Project Overview:
I am seeking an experienced mechanical engineer or transmission designer to take the full specifications of a manual gearbox (We will provide gear sets) and redesign the internal gear set into a dog engagement (dog box) configuration. The final output must include complete, production‑ready manufacturing drawings, tolerances, materials, and assembly notes suitable for CNC machining and heat‑treatment processes.
This project requires someone with proven experience in motorsport transmissions, gear design, and precision manufacturing documentation.
Scope of Work
1. Capture & Document Gearbox gear set Specifications
Reverse‑engineer or accurately model the existing M66 gearbox internals.
Measure or confirm:
Gear ratios
Tooth profiles
Shaft diameters
Bearing interfaces
Synchroniser assemblies
Clearances & tolerances
Material specifications (if known)
Produce a fully dimensioned 3D CAD model of the OEM gear set and shafts.
2. Dog Engagement Conversion
Redesign the gear set to use dog rings and dog engagement hubs.
Replace synchro assemblies with dog‑style engagement.
Maintain or adjust gear ratios (to be discussed).
Ensure compatibility with OEM casing, shafts, bearings, and lubrication system unless otherwise recommended.
Provide engineering justification for:
Dog tooth count
Engagement window geometry
Material selection
Heat treatment
Surface finishing
Expected torque capacity
3. Manufacturing Drawings (Critical Deliverable)
Provide complete, unambiguous drawings for every component, including:
Input shaft
Output shaft
All gears
Dog rings
Engagement hubs
Selector forks (if redesign required)
Spacers, thrust washers, circlips
Any modified housings or covers
Each drawing must include:
Fully dimensioned orthographic views
GD&T tolerances
Surface finish requirements
Material specifications
Heat treatment specifications
Hardness requirements
Machining notes
Assembly notes
Exploded diagrams where needed
4. Final Deliverables
Full 3D CAD model (STEP + native format)
Full 2D manufacturing drawing pack (PDF + DXF)
Bill of Materials
Tolerance stack‑up analysis
Assembly instructions
Optional: FEA on critical components (quote separately)
Required Experience
Applicants must demonstrate:
Prior work on dog boxes, sequential gearboxes, or motorsport transmissions
Strong background in gear design (involute profiles, dog engagement geometry, etc.)
Ability to produce manufacturing‑ready drawings
Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, or similar)
Understanding of heat treatment, case hardening, and high‑strength alloy steels
Please include examples of previous gearbox or motorsport drivetrain work in your proposal.
