VR PAINTBALL - 3D ARTIST (Stylized / Low-Poly, Unity URP)
Budget: $750 – $1,500 USD
We're building a kid-friendly multiplayer VR paintball game in the style of Rec Room's "Paintball" mode, and we need a freelance 3D artist to create the environments, props, weapons, VFX, and in-world UI art. Player characters are already done and are NOT part of this job.
Engine: Unity 6, Universal Render Pipeline (URP)
Platform: PCVR
Style: low-poly, bright, high-saturation, friendly - aimed at kids aged 8-12.
Gameplay: up to 20 players, Red vs Blue, teleport movement, paint that sticks to everything.
WHAT WE NEED
- One fully-dressed "hero" arena map (symmetric Red vs Blue layout), PLUS a reusable modular kit (bunkers, walls, crates, ramps, platforms) we can build more maps from ourselves.
- Team bases and spawn pads, Red and Blue.
- 3 paintball blasters (toy-like, easy to grip in a VR hand), the paintball projectile, and a stylized paint-splat decal sheet.
- Pickups / power-ups (about 4) and their spawner props.
- Enter your name UI elements
- Select character scene - a colorful "floating in space" platform, a space skybox, a ring of about 12 character-select pedestals, some UI elements (left arrow, right arrow, select button)
- Select game / Create game UIs
- World-space UI art: scoreboard, match timer, "Red Wins / Blue Wins" end screen, signage, an icon set, and menu panel graphics.
- VFX: muzzle flash, paint-splat burst, a friendly "you're out" poof, teleport marker, pickup glow, glow around the flag
KEY TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS (please read - assets that miss these need rework)
- URP materials only. No HDRP, no Built-in/Standard shaders. Keep material and draw-call counts low; use texture atlases.
- Real-world scale: 1 Unity unit = 1 meter. Built for VR performance (20 players plus hundreds of paintballs at 90-120 Hz).
- Every environment asset needs at least 3 LOD levels and simple colliders (box/capsule/convex - no heavy per-triangle mesh colliders).
- Paint sticks to surfaces, so every paintable mesh needs a clean, NON-OVERLAPPING second UV channel (UV1). This is critical - overlapping UVs break our paint system.
- Floors must be mostly flat, continuous, walkable surfaces (movement is teleport-only).
- Deliver Unity-ready prefabs (materials, LODs, and colliders already set up) plus source FBX and textures - organized, consistently named, with a demo scene per batch.
- Style is kids friendly (see Rec Room Paintball style) - it should not be realistic paintball style but a fun, colorful kids oriented style.
OUT OF SCOPE
- Player characters / avatars (already done), gameplay code, networking, and audio (characters are: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/3d/characters/humanoids/humans/kids-characters-modular-animated-pack-201839)
HOW WE'LL WORK (fixed-price milestones)
We start with a small PAID TEST: one modular bunker plus one crate, delivered fully Unity-ready (URP material, 3 LODs, collider, clean UV1 unwrap). If it's a good fit, we continue in milestone batches - modular kit, bases and pickups, weapons, hero map, flags, lobby, UI art, then VFX - each one approved and paid before the next begins. Rates, dates, and exact quantities to be agreed up front.
TO APPLY
- Portfolio link (please highlight stylized / low-poly work, and any Unity or VR work).
- One line on your experience with Unity URP and prefab/LOD setup.
- Your availability and rate expectations.
- Confirm you're open to the paid test task.
Full commercial ownership transfers to us on payment. All work must be original or from properly licensed sources.
