2D Java Farming Sim Prototype
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
We are looking for a Java / libGDX Game Developer to implement a 2D top-down farming game called Valley Day, inspired by cozy games such as Stardew Valley.
The project is based on a provided code skeleton, and the developer is expected to fully implement the game according to a detailed project specification.
The goal is to deliver a fully functional, playable game that strictly follows the given requirements.
Responsibilities
Develop a 2D top-down game using Java and libGDX
Implement dynamic map loading from .properties files
Build and integrate core gameplay mechanics, including:
Indestructible fences and destructible debris
Crop planting, multi-stage growth, harvesting, and rotting mechanics
Daylight countdown timer that determines win/lose conditions
Wildlife visitors with movement, crop stealing, and player interaction
Collectible tools and items (shovel, fertilizer, watering can)
Hidden exit logic and harvest quota system
Implement player movement and interactions via keyboard input
Design and update a dynamic HUD displaying game status
Create an in-game menu (pause, load map, exit) using libGDX only
Integrate background music and sound effects
Implement camera and viewport logic that adapts to different window sizes
Ensure clean, object-oriented code with proper class hierarchy
Document the code using JavaDoc
Commit work regularly with clear and meaningful Git commit messages
Required Qualifications
Strong knowledge of Java
Experience with libGDX or strong motivation to learn it quickly
Solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP)
Experience with file parsing and game logic implementation
Familiarity with Git and collaborative workflows
Ability to follow technical specifications precisely
Nice to Have (Bonus)
Experience with Box2D (collision detection)
Knowledge of basic game AI or NPC behavior
Ability to implement bonus features beyond minimum requirements
Previous experience with academic or indie game projects
Project Expectations
The project must compile, run smoothly, and be fully playable
All minimum requirements must be implemented completely
Code must not be shared publicly or pushed to external repositories
Final delivery must match the specification exactly
The code must absolutely not be worked on in its original form; a copy must be created and all work should be done on that copy.”
