Subsea Vehicle Prototype Mechanical design
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong prototype manufacturing and assembly skills to help build a first-article subsea vehicle prototype from our existing CAD models, 2D drawings, wiring diagrams, and BOM.
High-Level Role
You will act as the hands-on mechanical lead for this prototype build, taking our design package and driving it to physical hardware. This includes working with your own shop resources (or trusted vendors), coordinating fabrication, and overseeing the assembly and basic integration of the system.
Scope (High Level)
• Review our CAD and drawings for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and provide feedback.
• Coordinate or perform CNC machining / fabrication of custom parts, including:
• Pressure-rated housings and end caps
• Structural frames and mounting hardware for thrusters and internal modules
• Enclosures / brackets for cameras, lights, and electronics
• Internal plates, trays, and brackets for batteries and electronics
• Oversee or perform mechanical assembly of one complete prototype set.
• Support pressure / leak testing of selected housings (directly or via a test facility you can access).
• Perform basic electro-mechanical integration of customer-supplied electronics:
• Installing modules on mounts
• Routing and securing harnesses
• Terminating connectors / glands per our wiring diagrams
• Basic continuity / sanity checks (no firmware or software work)
We Will Provide
• 3D CAD models and 2D drawings
• Wiring diagrams and connector pinouts
• BOM with specified materials and key components
• A formal RFQ / SOW package once an NDA is in place
What We’re Looking For
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• Proven experience taking complex electro-mechanical systems from CAD to working prototypes.
• Experience with pressure-rated, marine, robotics, or similar rugged hardware is a strong plus.
• Access to or close collaboration with reliable fabrication resources (CNC, coatings, etc.).
• Comfort working in a quick-turn, prototype-oriented environment with practical, no-nonsense communication.
• Ability to ship the finished prototype to the USA and sign an NDA.
