Game Artist Needed for Stylized Character / Vehicle Concept and Game-Ready Asset Test
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
Project Type: Fixed-price / milestone-based
Project Stage: Early playable prototype
Engine: Unity
Art Style: Stylized, colorful, family-friendly, arcade-inspired
NDA Required: Yes, before full project details are shared
Project Overview:
I am looking for a game artist to help develop the visual style and production-ready asset direction for an original family-friendly action/adventure game currently in early prototype development.
The game uses simple side-scrolling gameplay with character-based interactions, environmental obstacles, and accessible controls designed for younger players.
Full character details, mechanics, references, story materials, and project-specific visual direction will be shared after an NDA is signed.
This is not a request for one polished illustration only. I am looking for an artist who can help create designs and assets that can either be used directly in-game or handed cleanly to a Unity developer for implementation.
Initial Scope:
The first milestone will focus on one playable character design package.
The character will need:
a clear gameplay silhouette
a family-friendly visual style
simple readable shapes
expressive design without excessive detail
a design that can work at gameplay scale
asset organization suitable for future animation or implementation
Possible Deliverables for Milestone 1:
Initial thumbnail sketches / silhouette exploration
One finalized character direction
Basic color palette
Clean character presentation sheet
Transparent PNG exports
Layered source files
Notes for how the asset should be separated or prepared for animation/game implementation
Nice-to-Have, But Not Required:
Unity asset experience
2D sprite or cutout animation experience
Experience creating game-ready assets
Experience with children’s games or toy-like character design
Experience designing stylized vehicles, robots, gadgets, or mechanical characters
Ability to create simple UI icons or character portraits later
Important Art Direction Notes:
The designs should feel heroic, friendly, readable, colorful, and appealing to young players.
Originality is very important. The character designs must avoid resemblance to existing game, toy, cartoon, or film franchises. I am looking for fresh silhouettes, distinct shape language, and a visual identity that can stand on its own.
The tone should be exciting and empowering for young players without being scary, violent, overly complex, or overly realistic.
What I Do NOT Need Right Now:
Full cinematic art
Full game world illustration
Complex 3D modeling unless specifically proposed
Final marketing key art
A complete cast of characters
Large animation sets
Full UI package
Full environment asset set
Current Goal:
The immediate goal is to establish a usable visual direction and asset pipeline for one character first. If the first milestone goes well, there may be additional paid work for more characters, UI portraits, simple environment assets, animation frames, and promotional art.
Applicant Questions:
Have you created game-ready 2D or 2.5D assets before?
Have you worked with Unity asset requirements before?
Can you provide layered source files suitable for animation or implementation?
Are you comfortable designing original characters that avoid existing IP similarities?
Are you willing to sign an NDA before receiving full project details?
What would you charge for one character design package?
What file formats can you deliver?
Please include links to relevant game art, character design, sprite, animation, or mechanical design work.
Preferred Milestone Structure:
Milestone 1: Concept Exploration
rough silhouettes
rough character ideas
style direction options
Milestone 2: Final Character Design
finalized character design
color palette
clean presentation sheet
Milestone 3: Game-Ready Asset Preparation
transparent PNG exports
layered source files
separated parts or sprite sheets if applicable
basic implementation notes for the Unity developer
Please provide your estimated cost and timeline for the first character package only.
